Grammar

GRAMMAR

What has happened to the state of our speech?
Is proper grammar beyond our reach?
Why can’t we use the proper tense?
Or construct a sentence that makes some sense.

It seems the phrase, “you really done good”
Is used more often than it should.
And other things like “he’s done hid”
Or “I think it’s already done been did”.

“Me and him”, is much overused.
Your own name first is often abused.
Making a statement like “He don’t know”.
And” I ain’t got nothin’s,” got to go.

Over yonder and fetch it here,
Are terms that make it very clear
That some don’t speak in exactly the way
That proper folks did in an earlier day.

“We already eat” offends the ear.
There must be some way to make it clear,
That speaking like this makes one sound like a fool,
And improper speech is never cool.

Is it really true that common use
allows us all to commit this abuse?
Does it permit one to overlook,
the proper words in Websters book?

It’s just an opinion, but I feel sure.
There is no quick and easy cure.
For solving our grammatical plight.
But we must all continue the fight.
